Genre Remix Reflection

From this boring, disengaging article....

To this atheistically pleasing and informative website!!!
Same information, different genres!

For this project, we had to choose a scholarly article related to our major/discipline and transform the information into a new genre for a different audience. It took me a few days to find an article that actually interested me, since in my opinion, most scholarly articles are pretty boring. I love food and nutrition, so I knew I could find an article that related to both those things and nursing that I would like, and I did. I thought the information of my article about what nutrients affect fetal and infant brain development was so interesting and relevant enough to be transformed into another genre. I chose to transform the information into an informative website for newly pregnant women or women who are planning to become pregnant. I thought that this mode was the most realistic, as I envisioned an OB/GYN doctor referring their patients to this website upon their first appointment early on in the pregnancy. I wanted to condense the information and use more basic and easily understandable wording than what was in the scientific article, so that anyone could learn from the website. I also designed it so that the pages and information would flow in a specific and clear way. The homepage displayed all of the pages and main topics, but if one were to click on the first topic (as most people would), after they read that first page, they would be directed to the next page that consisted of a topic that built off of the previous page’s information. This project really helped me to learn about threshold concept of writing as genre based, because I was able to understand how one set of information or writing could be presented in various modes/genres. The process of choosing a new audience and genre showed me how there are seemingly infinite genres that exist in writing and rhetoric. I also understood the connection between genre and audience, as the audiences for the scholarly article and my remixed genre website were different. Overall, this project helped me to understand a concept that at first I struggled with wrapping my mind around.
